Our two countries are on their way towards the European Union. The accession requires the adoption of the EU acquis in all aspects of social and economical affairs, including energy and environment - the latter known under the acronym 20:20:20 targets referring to 20% of improvements in energy efficiency, 20% of energy consumption to come from renewable energy source and to achieve reduction of CO2, emissions which is at least 20% below the 1990 level. While both countries are making good progress towards transposing the acquis into their national legislation and policy, there is actual slower progress in actual implementation of policies adopted. In addition, there is lack of awareness on Energy Efficiency issues and motivation and willingness to put it into action.
Increasing the awareness of local citizens, fostering the cooperation between the municipalities from both sides of the border, as well as active involvement of the business sector in the collaboration and communication process, will result in improvement of the current parameters regarding the energy production and consumption. This will be a step forward towards the ultimate goals of our countries - membership in EU.
